Maria Jelinek Ice Capades, 1965, by Justin McCarthy.

Mixed media on paper, 18″ x 24″. Ex Geoffrey Holder/Carmen de Lavallade Collection.

McCarthy began to paint when he was in an asylum (1915-1920), and continued to make work in his native Pennsylvania town. His expressionistic work caught the eye of collectors, the Strausers, who bought and promoted his art. McCarthy’s work has been included in exhibitions at MOMA, AMFA, and the PA Academy of Fine Arts.

In addition to being in the Ice Capades, Maria Jelinek was the 1962 world champion Pairs Skater.
